Lion’s Mane mushrooms and mycelium contain two molecules (hericinones and Erinacines) that have been linked to stimulating something called ‘Nerve Growth Factor’. This NGF is essential for the growth, maintenance and survival of our neurons, therefore enhancing overall brain function.

A healthy, well maintained brain is a clear and focussed one. in a fascinating Japanese study, Regular use of lions mane extract showed significant improvements in cognitive function in men and women diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment. Over in Finland they carried out behavioural study which showed that Lions mane extract significantly improved working memory, complex attention, and reaction time.

In Japan, lion’s Mane are called Yamabushitake, so named after the Yamabushi monks who wore dazzling white robes with flowing tassels that resembled the growing mushroom in its state of flowing icicles. They had a profound reverence for nature and led a life deeply immersed in the mountains, undertaking challenging pilgrimages, standing under cascading waterfalls to purify mind and spirit, and cultivating mindfulness in everything they did. It was said that they achieved a spiritual enlightenment by living in this way, and were even famed to be able to shape-shift into mountain spirits. How interesting to now be revealing how this mushroom can improve a clarity and focus (perhaps even mindfulness), and whilst its connection to the monks is only incidental and aesthetic, the patterns we find echoed throughout nature often dovetail in unexplainable ways.
Lion’s Mane has been used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine and in Chinese mythology is linked to the Qilin, a mythical creature embodying prosperity and longevity. In TCM It is believed to be beneficial for all five internal organs: liver, lung, spleen, heart, and kidney - Here are a few ways that it was used:

Our Extraction Process
Our mushrooms are triple extracted using alcohol, hot water and pressure (very high temperatures). But first is the harvest! We harvest our mushrooms by hand on our farm with care and attention paid to every mushroom we pick (this is one of our favorite tasks on the farm).The next step is to dehydrate and powder the mushrooms for extraction in high proof organic ethanol. This is a process that takes 4 weeks, with the mixture shaken every day. We then do a final pass of this solution through a heated mixer for 4-6 hours. Next we harvest more mushrooms to use fresh in our water extracts. The first is a long extract at lower temperatures that are specific to each species of mushroom and their unique profiles, and the next (using separate mushrooms again) is a high pressure extract in an autoclave. Finally, we filter and evaporate all of these solutions to concentrate to our final 1:4 super-strength ratio (its a lot of evaporation!).
All of this is to pull out as much of those wonderfully helpful compounds (both alcohol and water soluble) from the mushrooms as possible and to give you the best mushroom tincture we can - a product we are proud to stand behind!
